DESCRIPTION:Friday\, 07/28: Brave \nScripture \nJoshua 1:7 – “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left\, that you may be successful wherever you go.” \nThought for the Day \nThe book of Joshua opens with the commissioning of Joshua as Moses’ successor to lead the Hebrew people into the Promised Land. A striking feature is the admonition to “be strong and courageous\,” appearing three times in the first nine verses of the chapter. Joshua was no stranger to bravery. He was chosen by Moses as one of the 12 spies sent to Canaan. Ten spies returned freaked out and afraid to recommend a raid to take the land. Joshua and Caleb were the only two spies to urge the people to go for it. Moses tabs Joshua as his successor the people agree to follow him over the Jordan River for conquest of the Promised Land. Joshua’s commissioning sets a standard for leadership\, of courage and faithfulness\, an example for the people and providing the direction for life in the Promised Land. The call to be strong and courageous would have had a strong ring of familiarity to Joshua. He had heard it before in Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites. When he hears it this time it comes with a promise from God to be with him. God is the force behind strength and courage: the force behind genuine bravery. \nBravery is not foolish arrogance. It starts with fear\, but fear is overcome. Chesley Burnett “Sully” Sullenberger III overcame all fear and demonstrated astonishing bravery in a 2009 forced water landing of US Airways Flight 1549 after both engines were disabled by a bird strike. All 155 people aboard survived. It is called “The Miracle on the Hudson.” Biblical courage is the bravery produced by the goodness of God. Bravery motivated by human abilities and greed is not honorable. It is important to remember divinely motivated bravery does not come most often at critical moments of life or death\, but in the day-to-day choices we make about how we will live our lives and what values we will serve. Will you be brave enough to be perhaps the only one to say\, no\, when “everyone” is doing what you know in your heart to be wrong? Will you be brave enough to befriend the awkward kid being bullied by a popular kid? A Scout is brave. He or she has thought these questions through before they ever come up. They know the right answers and remember God’s promise to always be with the brave. \nQuestions for Discussion \n\nHow do you define bravery? Have you ever given thought to the idea that God is behind honorable acts of bravery?\nLittle acts of bravery take place every day. When was the last time you did something that you think was brave? Why did you do it?\n\nPrayer \nGod of Abraham\, Isaac\, Jacob\, Joseph\, Moses\, Joshua and all the brave people in the Bible\, I give thanks and am grateful to know that when I face tough challenges\, your promise is to be with me to inspire bravery in the face of adversity. Help me to honor You by choosing Biblical bravery in all the choices I make. A Scout is brave. Amen.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, 07/27: Thrifty \nScripture \nProverbs 6:6-8 – “Go to the ant\, O sluggard\, observe her ways and be wise\, Which\, having no chief\, officer or ruler\, prepares her food in the summer and gathers her provision in the harvest.” \nThought for the Day \nKing Solomon would be quick to remind Scouts in the great outdoors of what he wrote about watching ants. Solomon would frequently make use of examples in the natural world to teach wisdom principles. A seemingly unimposing creature\, the ant appears only twice in the Bible—here and in Proverbs 30:25. In both places\, it appears as an example of wisdom and thriftiness\, since ants work hard to store up food. They are unusual examples of industry\, hard work\, and determination. Apparently\, ants have no leader to direct them or inspect their work\, yet they work better than many people under a leader! Ants also work for their future needs\, storing and gathering while it is warm\, before winter comes. Anyone who has closely watched ants as they work to drag seemingly impossibly large bits of food to their nests will readily agree with Solomon that ants are striking examples of hard work. \nWe are slowly learning\, but still live in a throw-away society. Dumps\, landfills\, litter\, and pollution of creation stand as a silent\, and ugly rebuke to this non-thrifty way of life. The Leave No Trace principles taught in Scouting represent a completely opposite way of thinking. This care and respect for our planet is an excellent example of being thrifty and will preserve the Summit for Scouts for generations to come. Environmental thrift is not limited to Scouting. There are dozens of websites devoted to earth-friendly ways to be thrifty. These include household and personal use of water\, electricity\, tech\, paper and plastic products\, care of your pets\, food\, and kitchen supply choices\, composting and gardening\, car care and maintenance\, repair\, re-use\, and repurposing ideas. You can launch an Environmental Club at your school or church\, organize a community clean-up or recycling drive\, plant trees\, support eco-oriented businesses and websites. Having been blessed with this beautiful planet one of our duties to God is to take gentle care of it. Being thrifty is sometimes mistaken for being stingy or cheap. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to environmental thriftiness. This kind of thrift benefits the whole planet and everyone on it. King Solomon would approve. \nQuestions for Discussion \n\nIs your unit intentional about following Leave No Trace principles in all your outings? If not\, would you consider being your unit’s LNT Champion?\nHow are you being environmentally thrifty at home\, at school and in your daily life? What can you do more of or better?\n\nPrayer \nCreator God: Maker and Sustainer of our beautiful planet\, help me to see the beauty of creation in all that I do. Lead me to a lifestyle of environmental thriftiness that is a blessing to the earth and all its inhabitants. A Scout is Thrifty. Amen.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, 07/26: Cheerful \nScripture \nProverbs 15:13 – “A joyful heart makes a cheerful face\, but when the heart is sad\, the spirit is broken. \nThought for the Day \nWise old King Solomon says inner joy literally shows on a person’s face. What we are inside has more lasting impact on our emotional state than do our circumstances. Cheerful people hold up under difficult circumstances better than others because of inner strength. That cheerfulness is the product of a joy inside of us that we have consciously made the decision to grab and hold on to. \nIt was a cold and rainy night. Your tent leaked and your gear is wet. The weather for today looks bleak and breakfast is limited to cereal with reconstituted powdered milk. Cheerful? Yes! A Scout is cheerful. There is nothing to be done about the events of the previous night and you cannot change the weather. Unless you can personally lay some eggs\, cold cereal it is. What you can change\, or control is howyou will face these challenges. You have been given the gifts of Scouting\, being in the great outdoors at the Summit and a new day in which to enjoy it all. Remembering this should bring joy\, and as Scripture tells us\, “A joyful heart makes a cheerful face.” When you are cheerful\, it gives those around you a lift. People of faith have a mission to others—to add to their cheer. This cannot be done unless we first learn the lesson of cheerfulness ourselves. We cannot teach what we do not know. We cannot give what we do not have. Everyone has an atmosphere\, be it cheerful or depressing\, and we are responsible for this atmosphere. If you have trained yourself to be unhappy\, you can make others about you less happy. \nHave you ever wondered why being cheerful is part of the Scout Law? Isn’t being cheerful just part of someone’s nature — or not? How is it like trustworthiness\, loyalty\, or kindness? Well\, for Scouts\, cheerfulness is a duty. No day should pass without putting a little cheer into someone’s heart\, making their path a little smoother. This is easier if we train ourselves to see the good things\, our blessings in life. We need to look at life\, not to find misery\, but to find cheer. Another secret of cheerfulness is in the way we relate to the people around us. The privilege of helping and being a friend brings cheerfulness\, and a Scout with a cheerful spirit is a blessing wherever he or she goes\, carrying gladness\, lightening the load of others\, and making them cheerful. Now let’s get out there and be cheerful! \nQuestions for Discussion \n\nWho among my unit or patrol could use the presence of a cheerful spirit today? How can I share mine?\nHow am I blessing myself by being cheerful?\n\nPrayer \nGod of joy and good cheer; help me see the everyday blessings of life and give me the chance to cheerfully share those blessings with others I met today. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 07/25: Obedient \nScripture \nDeuteronomy 11:13 – “It shall come about\, if you listen obediently to my commandments which I am commanding you today\, to love the LORD your God and to serve Him with all your heart and all your soul.” \nThought for the Day \nJust what is “it” that shall come about you may ask. Good question! This verse is one of Moses’ “if/then” teachings. If you are obedient\, then good things will follow. Working the fields in Egypt was very difficult\, in part due to the lack of water. In the very dry summers water had to be elevated from the ponds and canals with crude animal- and human-powered water wheels and cylindrical pumps. \nThe Lord\, through Moses\, encourages the weary Israelites by telling them that the promised land is a place where the rains come down from heaven to water the land. The rain is the “then.” Obedience is the “if.” \nIn a culture that promotes individualism\, obedience is sometimes uncomfortable\, but the Scout Law includes it. Let’s think about when obedience is most important. Your parents and adult Scouters likely have what is best for you in mind when they lay down rules. Listen and respond appropriately. Save the eye-rolling for something else. This applies to any chores you are assigned. If you get a “no\,” consider why the person in authority answered that way rather than immediately arguing. Express any disagreement politely and directly to the person with whom you disagree\, not to your buddies. Be sure to pay attention and really listen when instructions are given. It really helps to understand what is expected of you. It is not always wrong to question authority\, but there is always a wrong way to do it. Avoid airing out your differences in a public situation. A reputation for being respectful and considerate goes a long way. If we are appropriately obedient\, then good things will follow. \nObedience applies to our faith life as well. Obedience implies commitment and appropriate humility in the face of both good and bad times. Making choices that reflect your faith is a form of obedience as well. With that should come the understanding that it is never OK to judge others based on their beliefs and obedience to their faith. \nQuestions for Discussion \n\nHow does obedience translate to the Troop or Patrol level? How can we guard against the abuse of authority?\nWhat are some possible legitimate limits to obedience?\n\nPrayer \nSovereign God\, to whom I owe full obedience\, help me to recognize and respect those in authority over me. Allow me to listen carefully and know what is expected of me. Guide me toward a reputation of being respectful and considerate. A Scout is obedient. Amen.
