DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, 07/22: Friendly \nScripture \nProverbs 17:17 – “A friend loves at all times\, and a brother is born for adversity.” \nThought for the Day \nLaughably misnamed\, “social media” is about as social as staying home to rearrange your sock drawer. Conceived as a way to connect people\, it has been shown that people today have fewer truly close friends than before social media became the norm. A “friend” is more than a click\, a like or hashtag. King Solomon\, in all his wisdom\, hit the nail on the head. A friend is a real live person you can depend on\, even (especially) when things are not going so well. It is also hugely important to remember a true friend is not necessarily your own personal “Get out of Jail Free” card either. It takes a dedicated and true friend to tell us when we need to consider the possibility that what we may be doing is not so friendly to others. This kind of friend is the friend King Solomon\, the biblical king best known for his wisdom\, calls “a brother (or sister) born for adversity.” The name Solomon means “peace” in Hebrew. Having this kind of friend can indeed bring about a feeling of great peace. \nThe worldwide Scouting movement is an international band of young people who have pledged friendship to one another. It is incredible to think that you have friends all over the planet\, but you do. This is a gift you will come to appreciate more and more in the environment of a Jamboree in an amazing place like the Summit. A Jamboree is a perfect opportunity to expand your world by making friends with Scouts of other social\, cultural\, and religious backgrounds. It is in a place like this we can come to see how much more we have in common than divides us. This is the time and place to be intentional about demonstrating friendship with the Scouts and Scouters in your unit\, subcamp and throughout the reservation. The day’s activities will be more fun\, run more smoothly and will build the foundation for friendships that can last a lifetime. If you don’t have a friend like King Solomon describes\, “one who loves at all times and is a brother (or sister) born for adversity\,” you really need to find and make one. If you do\, count your blessings\, and then try to find some more. \nQuestions for Discussion \n\nCan you name a “best friend”? How about three close friends?\nHow does a true friend interpret the phrase\, “I’ve got your back”?\n\nPrayer \nDear God\, my friend and guide; teach me to be a true friend. Always lead me on the path to love\, and to be a brother or sister born for adversity who can be counted on when my friends really need me. A Scout is friendly. Amen.

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, 07/21: Helpful \nScripture \nPsalm 54:4 – “Behold\, God is my helper; The Lord is the sustainer of my soul.” \nThought for the Day \nThere is no better illustration of this point of the Scout Law than our own Scout Slogan; “Do a good turn daily.” You may be starting your day with these devotions. If so\, be thinking even now. how you can be helpful to your tentmate\, the Scouts in your unit and other Scouts and Scouters you meet throughout the day. If you are closing your day with these devotions\, examine your day. Where were you helpful? Did you miss an opportunity to help another Scout or Scouter? And who was there to be helpful for you? The last question can never be realistically answered\, “no one.” A person of faith is never alone. Even on our toughest days\, when it seems like a helping hand is nowhere to be found\, the psalmist reminds us of the constant\, helpful presence of God. \nDavid was on the run from King Saul who was trying to kill him and was hiding in a place called\, Ziph. Far from helpful\, some of the residents leaked the information that David was hiding among them to Saul. David sought help from the place he knew he could count on as he had many times before – Almighty God. He confidently identifies his total trust in God as his helper and supporter. Betrayal by the people of Ziph placed David in great danger\, but he remained sure that God was on his side and would take his part in this situation. God would sustain him and bear him up and out of the danger. Despite any personal inconvenience it may pose\, a Scout should always strive to be as helpful as possible. It is the Scout who can and should be relied upon when the going gets tough. God is our ever-present help in times of trouble. If this is an attribute of God\, we ought to consider it an honor to emulate God and be helpful ourselves. \nQuestions for Discussion \n\nThink about the day ahead. Can you identify in advance any ways you can be helpful above and beyond normal expectations?\nHow do you feel when you get help from an unexpected source? Do you think you would enjoy making others feel that same way?\n\nPrayer \nGod of all help; use me today to be a source of help. Let me be the way to lighten someone’s burden and make their day more pleasant\, even memorable. May I be always reminded that as You help me every day\, I honor You by helping others. A Scout is helpful. Amen.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, 07/20: Loyal \nScripture \nJob 23:11 – “My foot has held fast to His path; I have kept His way and not turned aside.” \nThought for the Day \nLoyalty is more complicated than it seems on the surface. It can apply to a country\, an organization\, a school\, a church\, your unit\, or your patrol. On an individual basis\, loyalty describes an ideal bond held by two friends. You are probably familiar with the saying\, “I’ve got your back.” True and meaningful loyalty goes way beyond this. Covering for someone else’s mistakes or wrongdoing\, even if he or she is a good friend is not loyalty. Loyalty is better expressed by the saying\, “I’ll be there for you.” Mistakes have consequences\, but a loyal friend is there to help walk their friend through those consequences. A loyal friend is one you could call at 2:30 in the morning to help you work something out or just talk through a serious problem. A loyal friend will not abandon his or her friend in times of trouble and will give them the benefit of the doubt when there is conflict. \nLoyalty is a two-way street\, and it won’t always be easy. In today’s Scripture passage\, Job is explaining to his snarky friends\, Eliphaz\, Bildad and Zophar that he remained loyal to God despite a lot of bad things that had happened to him. His friends claimed God did those things because Job had sinned and had not confessed his sin to God. Despite his confusion over what had happened (and a lot\, had happened to poor Job) Job’s loyalty to God never wavered. He “held fast to God’s path\, kept His way and not turned aside.” Job\, by faith\, knew God would never leave\, nor forsake him. Job’s faith told him though there would always be trouble in the world\, God would loyally go in and through the trouble with him. God was in the lion’s den with Daniel. God was in the fiery furnace with Shadrach\, Meshach\, and Abednego. God went through the valley of the shadow of death with David. Loyalty will make demands on you\, but the measure of your loyalty will be how well you meet those demands to walk alongside your friend. \nQuestions for Discussion \n\n“Social media” was promoted as a tool to bring people together\, but people today have fewer genuinely close and loyal friends than at any time in our recent history. Who can you count among your closest and most loyal friends?\nHow do you demonstrate your loyalty to Scouting in your school and/or social context?\n\nPrayer \nGood and gracious God\, teach me\, I pray\, to be a loyal friend. Allow me to be the one who others can count on in good times and in bad. Use me to inspire loyalty in others. A Scout is loyal. Amen.

Other Scouts and Scouters know they can take you at your word and you will deliver what you promise or be able to provide a good reason why you could not. Trustworthiness cannot be turned on and off like a water spigot. To be truly trustworthy means demonstrating this important personal quality in allyour interactions with others\, big or small\, major or minor\, and whoever they may be. Having a reputation of trustworthiness identifies you as a young person of integrity. One popular definition of the word “integrity\,” is “doing the right thing when no one is watching\,” To a truly trustworthy person this comes as naturally as eating and drinking. Living a trustworthy life sets you apart as a leader. People willingly follow because they are secure in your approach to problem solving. \nIt is true that nobody is perfect. We all have room for improvement in the way we live the Scout Oath and Law. But being trustworthy should be non-negotiable. It all starts with a genuine commitment on your part to making a trustworthy lifestyle your priority. Ironically\, being untrustworthy is much more difficult. A lie may make things easier in the short term but will require constantly building a web of lies to support the ones that preceded them. Being trustworthy does not require keeping track of what you do and say because your words and actions are always based on your honesty. Your time at the Summit can serve as a great proving ground for your sincere effort to make yourself a most trustworthy Scout. Whatever responsibility you have been given or task assigned\, strive your hardest to be the Scout who can be depended on to get the job done. Build a solid reputation of trustworthiness to carry home and keep building. Be the Scout who “they trusted and were not disappointed.” \nQuestions for Discussion \n\nWhat does trustworthiness look like to you at the Summit? At school? At home?\nYou stop by your tent to grab your sunglasses and see a baggie of pot under your tentmate’s cot. What response would be the most trustworthy?\n\nPrayer \nO most trustworthy God\, I pray to become more like you. Teach me to be a person of integrity who can be trusted to keep my promises and do and say what is right in all circumstances. A Scout is trustworthy. Amen.
