SUMMARY:8:00AM-5:00PM: Radio Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit #1: Listen to an AM signal with a hardwater-built radio \nAM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions\, and is still used worldwide primarily for medium waves (also known as “AM band”) transmissions\, but also on the long wave and shortwave radio bands. Compared to FM or digital transmissions\, AM transmissions are less expensive to transmit and can be sent over long distances\, however they are much more susceptible to interference\, and often have lower audio fidelity. Thus\, AM broadcasters tend to specialize in spoken-word formats\, such as talk radio\, all news and sports\, with music formats primarily for FM and digital stations. \nWe will build an AM Radio receiver by creating a custom circuit consisting of capacitors\, diodes transistors\, resistors\, an inductor\, antenna\, and headphones. \n  \nExhibit #2: Listen to a “HAM” radio broadcast \nAmateur Radio (ham radio) is a popular hobby and service that brings people\, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town\, around the world\, or even into spaces\, all without the Internet or cell phones. It’s fun\, social\, educational\, and can be a lifeline during times of need. \nDemonstrate tuning a shortwave reciever \n  \nExhibit #3: Listen to an FM Signal with a software built radio \nEvery time that we listen to the music on the car radio above between 80-110 MHz\, our radio receiver performed a demodulation of a Frequency Modulated (FM) signal. Frequency modulation changes the frequency of a transmitted signal over time to reflect the data being transmitted. In the diagram we show an example of x(t) that we want to transmit at a high frequency. To do that\, we use FM to change the frequency of the carrier wave to increase/decrease with our radio signals x(t). Notice how when the x(t) wave is above the green  increases and how when it’s below\, it decreases. \nWe will build a FM radio receiver in the GNU Radio Companion to listen to our local FM radio stations. To do this\, plug your RTL-SDR USB peripheral into your computer’s USB port. This USB stick reads the information from the radio antenna\, amplifies and filters the radio waves\, and then passes the data to the computer for processing. \n  \nExhibit #4: Focus Photons with a Parabolic Dish \nAs their name suggests\, satellite dishes catch electromagnetic signals from satellites that transmit your favorite movies\, sports matches\, or whatever other programmed you like to watch. You can think of these signals as arriving from space in the shape of parallel rays. When these rays hit the satellite they are reflected\, just like light is reflected by the mirror. The shape of the dish ensures that\, if the incoming rays are parallel to the axis of symmetry of the dish\, then they all meet at a single point once they have been reflected. This point is called the focus (or the focal point) of the satellite dish. A receiver placed at the focal point will pick up the information from all the rays entering the dish at the same time. \nDemonstrate focusing light under the parabolic dishes.  \n

SUMMARY:8:00AM-5:00PM: Alumni Communities at Alumni Adventure Complex
DESCRIPTION:Alumni Communities: (Affiliate Groups\, Affinity Groups\, and BSA Partners) \nThe BSA Alumni Association has developed its Alumni Relations Exhibit specifically to help dispel the notion that Scouting ends at 18 years of age. Historically\, when Scouts go off to college\, military careers\, and various other occupations\, many never return to the Scouting program…or when they do\, it’s not until their own children enter the program. As such\, the BSA Alumni Association has developed an umbrella of Alumni Communities to serve as connection points to keep Scouts engaged. Whether it’s NESA\, the OA Alliance\, ATAS\, Health Care Professions\, Educators\, Firefighters\, High Adventure Base Staff Associations\, etc.\, be sure to stop by and see what connections you find interesting.

SUMMARY:8:00AM: Vanguard Scouting (LDS) Daily Devotions
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 07/25: Obedient \nScripture \nDeuteronomy 11:13 – “It shall come about\, if you listen obediently to my commandments which I am commanding you today\, to love the LORD your God and to serve Him with all your heart and all your soul.” \nThought for the Day \nJust what is “it” that shall come about you may ask. Good question! This verse is one of Moses’ “if/then” teachings. If you are obedient\, then good things will follow. Working the fields in Egypt was very difficult\, in part due to the lack of water. In the very dry summers water had to be elevated from the ponds and canals with crude animal- and human-powered water wheels and cylindrical pumps. \nThe Lord\, through Moses\, encourages the weary Israelites by telling them that the promised land is a place where the rains come down from heaven to water the land. The rain is the “then.” Obedience is the “if.” \nIn a culture that promotes individualism\, obedience is sometimes uncomfortable\, but the Scout Law includes it. Let’s think about when obedience is most important. Your parents and adult Scouters likely have what is best for you in mind when they lay down rules. Listen and respond appropriately. Save the eye-rolling for something else. This applies to any chores you are assigned. If you get a “no\,” consider why the person in authority answered that way rather than immediately arguing. Express any disagreement politely and directly to the person with whom you disagree\, not to your buddies. Be sure to pay attention and really listen when instructions are given. It really helps to understand what is expected of you. It is not always wrong to question authority\, but there is always a wrong way to do it. Avoid airing out your differences in a public situation. A reputation for being respectful and considerate goes a long way. If we are appropriately obedient\, then good things will follow. \nObedience applies to our faith life as well. Obedience implies commitment and appropriate humility in the face of both good and bad times. Making choices that reflect your faith is a form of obedience as well. With that should come the understanding that it is never OK to judge others based on their beliefs and obedience to their faith. \nQuestions for Discussion \n\nHow does obedience translate to the Troop or Patrol level? How can we guard against the abuse of authority?\nWhat are some possible legitimate limits to obedience?\n\nPrayer \nSovereign God\, to whom I owe full obedience\, help me to recognize and respect those in authority over me. Allow me to listen carefully and know what is expected of me. Guide me toward a reputation of being respectful and considerate. A Scout is obedient. Amen.
