In just a few short months you’ll be lacing up your hiking boots to volunteer @NatJamboree23, and it’s never too early to begin your physical fitness preparations. Here are four ways you can begin to prepare to navigate the amazing West Virginia terrain. Please note: Always consult with your doctor before embarking on any new exercise program and start out slowly.

  • Wean yourself off the sugar-laden soft drinks. You’ll need plenty of hydration during the Jamboree and water is best! Don’t wait until you are thirsty, but drink water or half strength sports drinks (diluted with water) so that you need to go to the bathroom every couple of hours and the urine doesn’t look like a yellow post-it note but is clear.
  • Begin a regular walking program and gradually increase the distance. You’ll put some miles on your hiking boots during the Jamboree…start preparing now by walking regularly (after consulting with your doctor if you have any medical issues).
  • Make strides toward eating cleaner by substituting fresh vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins for high-calorie fast-food restaurant meals and other processed foods.
  • Get outside with a goal of at least two hours a day for the weeks preceding the Jamboree!  Especially the month leading up to the Jamboree.  Even light exercise in the heat will help get you used to the heat typically experienced at the Jamboree.

It’s going to be an amazing few weeks at The Summit. Starting your physical preparations now will help ensure you have a great Jamboree experience!
