The Boy Scouts of America is proud to announce a unique initiative at the upcoming National Jamboree that aims to make a positive difference in the local West Virginia community. With a focus on addressing the impact of flooding, this project will empower Scouts to assemble and donate 5,000 essential cleaning kits, known as “flood buckets,” to families in need. This meaningful program embodies the spirit of service and reinforces the commitment of the Boy Scouts to leave a lasting impact.
Russell Smart, Service & Impact Area Lead, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, “Through this initiative, Scouts will have the opportunity to contribute to the restoration efforts of flood-affected families in a small but meaningful way. It is inspiring to witness the Scouts’ dedication to making a positive impact on the local community and their commitment to the Scout Law, which calls for service to others.”
The flood buckets, designed in collaboration with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), contain a range of cleaning products necessary for families to begin the restoration of their homes. UMCOR, a renowned organization, has been supporting communities affected by natural disasters for years, and their expertise and guidance have been instrumental in shaping this project.
During the National Jamboree, each participating Scout and their buddy will be guided through a powerful educational journey. They will visit interactive exhibits that showcase the impact of flooding on communities and explore the “before” and “after” scenarios of a typical home affected by a flood. Afterwards, Scouts will assemble the flood buckets using materials generously provided by Walmart.
Smart emphasized the potential of this project, “This initiative is just the latest in a long history of efforts fulfilling the promise we made to WV when we began the development of the Summit about giving back to the local community. It is an important part of our Scouting presence that we keep our promises.”
The completed flood buckets, each bearing the official National Jamboree logo and accompanied by a heartfelt note of encouragement signed by the Scouts, will be transported to UMCOR’s warehouse in Beckley. From there, UMCOR will distribute the flood buckets to families in need, ensuring that the Scouts’ efforts reach those who require support the most.
National Jamboree is committed to fostering a sense of community, celebrating diversity, and promoting the values of Scouting. By engaging Scouts in this impactful program, the event encourages personal growth, empathy, and the understanding that even the smallest acts of kindness can create a ripple effect of positive change.

Great idea. Are troops going into towns to do a service project?
Hi Guy, as of right now, this service project will take place on-site at The Summit.
