Leadership Heights- Leadership Heights helps Scouts take their leadership to all-new heights! This half-day, unit scheduled program has four components: Launch, Experiences, Speaker Series and Elevate. After gathering in Summit Center and then hiking to the J.W. Marriott, Jr. Leadership Center, Scouts will engage in a series of interactive experiences that test their leadership, communication, and team-building skills. Compelling speakers who are prominent leaders from different industries, nonprofits, universities, and the military will help shape a Scout’s understanding and appreciation for leading and leadership. The experience is topped off by Elevate, an immersive experience that will challenge Scouts and ask for their commitment to lead our world ‘forward’.

Speakers at Leadership Heights
Stanley McChrystal, Former Commander of U.S. and International Forces in Afghanistan
A four-star general, he is the former commander of US and international forces in Afghanistan and the former leader of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), which oversees the military’s most sensitive forces. His leadership of JSOC is credited with the 2003 capture of Saddam Hussein and the 2006 location and killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq.
McChrystal graduated from West Point in 1976 and was commissioned as an infantry officer. He later trained at the Special Forces School in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and spent much of his career commanding special operations and airborne infantry units. During the Persian Gulf War, McChrystal served in a Joint Special Operations Task Force and later commanded the 75th Ranger Regiment. He was promoted to brigadier general in 2001.
In 2002, he was appointed chief of staff of military operations in Afghanistan. From 2003–2008, he commanded JSOC and was responsible for leading the nation’s deployed military counter-terrorism efforts around the globe, assuming command of all international forces in Afghanistan in June 2009.
General McChrystal co-founded the McChrystal Group in 2010. Its mission is to deliver innovative leadership solutions to organizations which help them transform and succeed in challenging and dynamic environments. He is also a senior fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, where he teaches a popular course on leadership.
As a world renowned medical expert and leader, Dr. Birx has focused her work on clinical and basic immunology, infectious disease, pandemic preparedness, vaccine research, and global health. Most recently, Dr. Birx served as the White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator. Dr. Birx recently completed her first book entitled Silent Invasion, published by HarperCollins.
In 2014, Dr. Birx became an Ambassador-at-Large, when she assumed the role of the Coordinator of the United States Government Activities to Combat HIV/AIDS and U.S. Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy. As the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, she oversaw the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease in history.
Dr. Birx began her career with the Department of Defense as a military trained clinician in immunology, focusing on HIV/AIDS vaccine research. Dr. Birx led RV 144, or the Thai trial, one of the most influential HIV vaccine trials in history, which provided the first supporting evidence of any vaccine’s potential effectiveness in preventing HIV infection.
Dr. Birx’s honors include two U.S. Meritorious Service Medals, the Legion of Merit Award, the CDC’s William C. Watson, Jr. Medal of Excellence, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the African Society for Laboratory Medicine. She received her medical degree from the Hershey School of Medicine, Pennsylvania State University, and she trained in internal medicine and basic and clinical immunology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Birx is board certified in internal medicine, allergy and immunology, and diagnostic and clinical laboratory immunology.
Scott Pelley 60 Minutes Correspondent & Former CBS News Anchor and Managing Editor
After covering the most compelling and historic stories of the last 40 years, 60 Minutes correspondent and former CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley is one of the most recognizable faces in American journalism today.
Pelley has been reporting for 60 Minutes, America’s number one news program, for nearly 25 years. During that time, half of all the major awards won by 60 Minutes have been for stories he has reported. His reporting for 60 Minutes has taken him to the battlefields of Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and also includes news-making interviews with presidents, kings, and global celebrities. He captured the nation’s attention with exclusive interviews of President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, as well as his interview with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, which took place in Zelensky’s blacked-out bunker near the beginning of the Russian invasion.
Pelley previously served as anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News from 2011 to 2017. In that time, he made the storied flagship of CBS News the fastest growing evening news broadcast in America and grew the broadcast by an additional 1.5 million viewers.
Pelley is also the author of the book, Truth Worth Telling, which offers a collection of inspiring tales, reminding us of the importance of values in our uncertain times.

Elaine Ho is NASA’s Chief Diversity Officer, providing executive and transformative leadership over diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) policy and programs for the entire NASA workforce. Ho leads the strategy and execution of NASA’s external civil rights programs; NASA’s DEIA Strategic Plan; cross-agency workforce and program data and analytics; Agency-wide anti-harassment, reasonable accommodation, EEO complaints, and conflict resolution programs; and DEIA-related training.
Ho is a long-time public servant who has remained connected to DEIA throughout her career. Most recently at NASA, she served as the Deputy Associate Administrator for NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, responsible for leading and managing a wide-ranging portfolio of projects and initiatives that benefit students, universities and educational institutions across the country. Ho began her federal career in senior roles at Department of Agriculture and the IRS, leading transformative workplace diversity and inclusion strategies, including diversity recruitment through student internships. She then served as IRS’s Deputy Chief of Staff where she helped to shape and execute the strategic priorities of the IRS’s global tax operation and its workforce of 87,000. Ho went on to serve several roles in the White House. In 2015, she held the position of Senior Policy Advisor, working with Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Office to implement the Let Girls Learn initiative, focused on adolescent girls’ education worldwide. In 2017, she remained in the White House as the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Digital Service, an office dedicated to recruiting diverse top technical talent and deploying teams across the federal government to deliver better services to the American public. After joining NASA, Ho returned to the White House in 2021 on a year-long detail as Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the Director of Space STEM Policy in the Office of the Vice President’s National Space Council.
Prior to her federal service career, Ho was a practicing attorney, specializing in employment law and workplace diversity and inclusion. She also served over four years active duty as an Air Force criminal prosecutor. She continues her military service today as a Colonel in the Air Force Reserves, where she helps the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps with its diversity and inclusion initiatives. Ho received her degree in civil engineering from Duke University, her Juris Doctor from the University of Florida, and executive certificate in diversity strategy from Georgetown University
A Distinguished Eagle Scout, Tilden has been involved with the BSA for more than 50 years. As a youth, he earned his Eagle from Troop 392 in the Chief Seattle Council in 1976 and worked on summer camp staff for four years. As an adult, he served on the board — and later as chair — of the Chief Seattle Council before joining the BSA National Board as finance chair in 2014.
As chair of the Chief Seattle Council, he oversaw the operations of one of the largest councils in the country, serving more than 17,000 young people across the Pacific Northwest. During his tenure, Tilden expanded the reach of the organization, particularly in underserved communities, and strengthened partnerships with local businesses and community organizations.
As a member of the BSA’s National Board, he helped shape the strategic direction of the organization and promoted its mission of building character and leadership skills in young people. In this role, he worked closely with other board members and leaders to address the evolving needs of the organization and to ensure that it remained relevant and impactful in the lives of young people.
Tilden retired as Chair of Alaska Air Group in May 2022 and as CEO of Alaska Air Group in March 2021 after spending 31 years with the company. In these roles, he drove Alaska Air Group to focus on safety, low fares, profitable network growth, industry-leading operations, and outstanding customer service. The company earned 12-consecutive J.D. Power awards for highest customer satisfaction while Tilden was President and then CEO.
Tilden follows recent BSA national chairs Dan Ownby, senior director of business development and joint ventures at Buckeye Partners; Jim Turley, former global chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young; Randall Stephenson, chairman and CEO of AT&T; former U.S. Secretary of Defense Dr. Robert M. Gates; Wayne M. Perry, former CEO and vice chairman of Edge Wireless (AT&T Wireless); and former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
Traupe’s work centered on responding to trends impacting the global landscape. As a member of the CIA’s Expanded Corporate Board, Traupe led thousands of officers from different professional units, developed and executed multi-billion-dollar budgets, and addressed acute intelligence and foreign policy challenges on behalf of the CIA director.
Prior to the CIA, Traupe served in the United States Marine Corps for nearly 10 years. He held several command and staff assignments. Traupe played a key role in managing three separate non-combatant evacuation operations in The Gambia, Albania, and Zaire, during which, a total of 1,500 U.S. citizens were safely rescued.
Traupe’s honors include the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, Clandestine Service Career Award, CIA’s Director Award (twice), George W. Bush Award for Excellence, and the Presidential Rank Award. He holds an MBA from American University and a BA in communications from the University of Michigan, where he starred as a linebacker participating in two Rose Bowls and a Gator Bowl.
U.S. Air Force retired Colonel, DeDe Halfhill is a proven leader with 25 years of command experience and as a senior advisor to the military’s highest-ranking officials.
Twice deployed to Iraq, DeDe’s sought-after leadership insights are grounded in personal experiences commanding and advising organizations through challenging environments — often when lives were at risk and there were no easy answers. As a senior advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, DeDe was a trusted influence in developing solutions to the military’s most-pressing issues. She also served as the military’s lead spokesperson responsible for implementing plans supporting the Department of Defense’s global communications strategy.
Prior to advising the Department of Defense’s top leaders, DeDe was the commander of the 2nd Mission Support Group at Barksdale Air Force Base where she led network communications, personnel, procurement, infrastructure, security, and logistics operations in support of the Air Force’s nuclear enterprise headquarters. Her previous roles also include national security fellow at Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy and deputy director of public affairs for U.S. Pacific Command, as well as commander of the 332nd Force Support Squadron in Joint Base Balad, Iraq, Department of Defense congressional fellow advising an Indiana senator, and senior advisor to the Air Force chief of staff. In an earlier role, she served as chief of public affairs for the Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squad.
DeDe’s military service began when she graduated in 1996 from the University of Iowa’s Reserve Officer Training Corps. In addition to her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Iowa, she has earned a Masters of Arts degree in Management from American Military University and certifications from the Air War College, Air Command and Staff College, Squadron Officer School, and Defense Information School.
Hakeem Oluyesi Astrophysicist, Fmr. Space Science Education Lead for NASA
Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi, author of the critically acclaimed memoir, A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Streets to the Stars, is an internationally-recognized astrophysicist & science TV personality
Most recently, he served as an Astrophysicist and Space Science Education Lead for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. In addition, he was a professor of Aerospace, Physics, and Space Sciences at the Florida Institute of Technology. A former TED fellow, Dr. Oluseyi holds eight U.S. patents, four E.U. patents, and co-hosts several shows on Science Channel and Discovery International, including Outrageous Acts of Science, How the Universe Works, Space’s Deepest Secrets, Strange Evidence, You Have Been Warned, and Strip the Cosmos. Dr. Oluseyi holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics from Tougaloo College, and a Master’s and Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University.
In addition to being the president of the National Society of Black Physicists, Dr. Oluseyi has won several honors including selection as a 2018 Communications Award from the National Space Club, 2015 MIT Faculty Fellow, 2015 induction into the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame, 2012 TED Global Fellow, a 2011 and 2013 U.S. State Department Speaker & Specialist, the Outstanding Technical Innovation and Best Paper at the 2010 NSBE Aerospace Systems Conference, the 2006 Physics Technical Achiever of the Year by the National Technical Association, a 2005 NASA Earth/Sun Science New Investigator Fellow, the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation Astrophysics Research Fellow, the Ernest O. Lawrence Astrophysics Research Fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2001-2003), and as a NASA GSRP Fellow at Stanford University.
Before transitioning to private industry, Guy served as an award-winning fighter pilot, TOPGUN Instructor, and U.S. Navy commander. His tours of duty include combat missions in the Middle East during Operation Iraqi Freedom and as commanding officer for a Japan-based fighter squadron. Recognized as one of the best fighter pilots in the U.S. Navy, Guy earned Pilot of the Year, Tactical Aviator of the Year, and Michael Hoff Attack Aviator of the Year awards across three successive years, an unprecedented feat. He was also valedictorian and distinguished graduate of his Naval War College class, earning multiple awards for his written work.
Guy served as the Pentagon’s Director of Communications and Secretary of Defense James Mattis’s chief speechwriter.
Today, Guy is the CEO of Defense Analytics, an international strategic advisory and consulting firm. A Forbes contributor, Guy also appears as a commentator for Fox News, CNN, SiriusXM, Bloomberg, and similar outlets.
He is also the author of two books. He most recently authored TOPGUN’s TOP 10: Leadership Lessons from the Cockpit, which explores life and leadership lessons through the lens of the high-performance fighter pilot community. His first book, Holding the Line: Inside Trump’s Pentagon with Secretary Mattis, explores America’s military and the challenging dynamic between Mattis and Trump during a dynamic period in U.S. history.
Guy earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from the United States Naval Academy, two master’s degrees from MIT (computer science and nuclear engineering), and a third master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College.
Julie Sweet- Chair and CEO of Accenture
Julie Sweet is chair and chief executive officer of Accenture. She became CEO in September 2019 and assumed the additional position of chair in September 2021.
Previously, she served as chief executive officer of Accenture’s business in North America, the company’s largest geographic market. Prior to that, she was Accenture’s general counsel, secretary, and chief compliance officer for five years. Before joining Accenture in 2010, Julie was a partner for 10 years in the law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP.
Julie serves on the World Economic Forum Board of Trustees. Additionally, Julie is board chair of Catalyst and serves on the board of trustees for the Center for Strategic & International Studies and for the Marriott Foundation for People with Disabilities – Bridges from School to Work.
Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Claremont McKenna College and a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School.

Mr. Scott entered on duty with the FBI in 2003 and was initially assigned to the Louisville Field Office, working a variety of criminal matters and serving as a member of the SWAT team. In 2006, Mr. Scott transferred to the Washington Field Office, where he investigated organized crime, Counterterrorism, public corruption and white collar crime matters. Mr. Scott was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent within the FBI’s International Terrorism Operations Section in 2012, and in 2014 was promoted to Unit Chief of the International Terrorism Operations Section’s CONUS 1, where he provided program management for all International Terrorism investigations in the Northeastern United States. In 2016, Mr. Scott was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent with the FBI Washington Field Office.
In 2018, Mr. Scott was selected as Assistant Special Agent in Charge for the Washington Field Office Counterterrorism Division, overseeing all International Terrorism threats to the National Capitol Region. In March 2020, Mr. Scott was promoted to the Senior Executive Service as the Section Chief for the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section, where he was responsible for oversight of the FBI’s Public Corruption, International Corruption, Civil Rights, and International Human Rights programs.
Mr. Scott earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Master’s in Administration of Justice from the University of Louisville. Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Scott was an Infantry officer in the United States Army.
Michael Sears leads the Leadership Innovation Laboratory, where he introduces faculty, staff and students to some of the latest developments in technology and science, with the aim of making learning deeper, more relevant, and more interesting. The Laboratory produces products with Virtual and Augmented Reality, Social Media attributes and Artificial Intelligence. Every student Midshipman takes at least one class per year in Leadership, Ethics, Character and the Law.
He is a 30-year veteran of California’s Silicon Valley where he worked in both large and small technology companies. He worked his way through the ranks to become a CEO of a technology company, and the founder of an Internet media company. During that time, he was granted three U.S. patents. He spent 10 years as a Palo Alto-based Venture Capitalist and has been a board member in both private and public companies, for-profit as well as non-profits. He is currently a member of the National Executive Committee and the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. Sears holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy, and earned three letters in track and field, plus a freshman letter in crew. He earned both a Juris Doctorate degree and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.
Before graduate school, Mr. Sears served as a Marine Officer in an infantry battalion as the unit’s Intelligence Officer, and the sniper and surveillance Platoon Commander. After earning his Naval Aerial Observer wings, Mr. Sears served as a Flight Officer in a reconnaissance squadron.
Mr. McCloughan was raised in the rural area of Bangor, MI. He graduated from Olivet College in 1968 with a BA in Sociology. Drafted into the United States Army in 1968, Jim served as a combat medic with the Americal Division where he rose to the rank of Specialist Five. In one battle alone “Doc” McCloughan has been credited with moving into the “kill zone” on ten occasions, saving ten American lives and one Vietnamese interpreter’s life.
Specialist McCloughan was highly decorated receiving the Combat Medic Badge, two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars with “V” device for valor, The U. S. Army Valorous Unit Citation, The National Defense Medal, The Good Conduct Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal with three Battle Stars, The Vietnam Campaign Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palms and one Oak Leaf Cluster and the M16 Expert Rifle Badge. In 2017, Jim was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military commendation.
In 1970, upon returning home from service to our country, Mr. McCloughan resumed his contract with South Haven Public Schools and in 1972 earned a MA in counseling. Remaining with South Haven High School for 38 years, Jim taught psychology and sociology while coaching football, wrestling, baseball, and American Legion Baseball. As a MHSAA wrestling official, he was selected to referee eighteen MI Wrestling State Finals. Jim has been inducted into three athletic halls of fame, plus the MI High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, the MI High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame, and the MI High School Coaches Hall of Fame which represents coaches from all boys’ and girls’ sports. In June 2019, Jim was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Since retirement Jim has remained dedicated to his community and the nation, as a member of non-profit organizations, serving multiple charitable projects, assuming roles on boards and performing as a vocalist. Representing the Medal of Honor, Jim speaks across the nation. He and his wife, Chérie, reside in Saugatuck, MI. They have four adult children, seven grandchildren, and two standard poodles.
Roger C. Mosby is the 14th Scout Executive, President and CEO of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), a non-profit youth organization started in 1910 and chartered by the US Congress in 1915.
Mr. Mosby spent the majority of his professional career as an executive in the oil and gas industry. He retired from a leading energy infrastructure company, Kinder Morgan, in 2015.
Mr. Mosby was a Boy Scout as a youth and served more than 33 years as a volunteer in the BSA’s Mid-America and Sam Houston Area councils, in addition to the Southern Region and National Committees of the BSA. He also served as chair of the Audit Committee for the World Organization of the Scout Movement. He has received the Silver Antelope and Silver Beaver Award, the highest honors for volunteers at the regional and local levels, respectively, and is a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s honor society. Mr. Mosby was recently awarded the Bronze Wolf for “outstanding service by an individual to the World Scouting Movement”. He is the 381st individual and the 40th American to be honored by the Bronze Wolf since the award’s inception in 1935.
Roger and his wife Gwen currently reside in Irving, Texas, have four grown sons and five grandchildren.
Dan McCarthy completed a 38 year career in the United States Navy in 2007. Retiring as a Vice Admiral, his final assignment was as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Fleet Readiness and Logistics in the Pentagon where he was responsible for Navy-wide policy, programming, and resourcing for fleet readiness, logistics, strategic sealift, Navy installations and environmental programs.
Dan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Oakland University and a Master of Science in Management from the Naval Postgraduate School, where he graduated with distinction. He also holds a Presidential Honorary degree from West Virginia University.
Following his retirement from military service, Dan established Silver Eagle Consulting, a firm dedicated to providing business and leadership consulting support to both public and private sector organizations. During this period, Dan acted as a Visiting Lecturer at the graduate business schools of the University of Virginia, University of North Carolina and the Naval Postgraduate Schools.
A lifelong Scouter leader, Dan became the Group Director of the Boy Scouts of America’s Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in April 2012 where he oversaw final construction and program development for the 14,000 acre recreational facility.
Retiring in March of 2017, Dan continues to be involved in various Scouting capacities including as Assistant Council Commissioner for West Virginia’s Buckskin Council. He is a Board member of the West Virginia Humanities Council and serves as an Advisory Council Member within the John Chambers College of Business and Economics.
Dan is married to Carol Ann McCarthy, also an avid Scouter, and has three Eagle Scout sons.
